We're bringing a painting to life through theatre in an exciting new take on Hamlet in spaces throughout the Graves Gallery, Sheffield.

Man With A Skull by Anonymous © Sheffield MuseumsHamlet Off the Wall debuts at the Graves Gallery to celebrate Shakespeare's 400th anniversary. This exciting new production weaves together original Shakespearean text and new writing inspired by works in the gallery collection, which includes Man with a Skull, an anonymous oil painting in the style of Jusepe de Ribera.

Visitors will join Hamlet’s friend Horatio as he guides them through the Graves Gallery to visit an enigmatic painting of Hamlet and Yorick the skull, before bringing it to life and discovering what happened to Hamlet before and after the moment preserved forever in the painting.

Museums Sheffield and Sheffield Libraries have partnered with 1623 to bring Hamlet Off the Wall to the Graves Gallery. The production is part of 1623's and Sheffield Libraries’ Shakespeare 400 programme of activity – a national celebration of the legacy of Shakespeare 400 years after his death.

1623 is an award-winning, five-star Shakespeare theatre company based at QUAD, a thriving arts centre in the heart of Derby. Previous performances have taken place at the National Theatre Watch This Space Festival, RSC Fringe, London 2012 Open Weekend, BBC Gardeners' World Live, Derby Theatre Studio, Glastonbury Festival, Nottingham Playhouse and Poole's Cavern.

Rosie Eagleton, events producer at Museums Sheffield, said: “We’re delighted to be hosting 1623’s performances of Hamlet Off the Wall – the production has been developed especially to be performed at the Graves and I can’t wait to see it!”

Ben Spiller, 1623 artistic director added: “We are thrilled to be working with Museums Sheffield and are very excited to be able to perform in such a fantastic space. The works in the Graves Gallery are filled with drama and emotion – perfect inspirations and backdrops for Hamlet Off the Wall"

Hamlet Off the Wall will be performed in the Graves Gallery on Friday 22 and Saturday 23 April. Tickets are £12. They are available by calling Museums Sheffield’s booking line on 0114 278 2655. Performances take place on 22 April at 8-9pm and on 23 April at 6-7pm, 8-9pm and 10-11pm.
